Deputies apprehend suspect following a brief car and foot pursuit.

Yesterday (monday) afternoon Kern County Sheriffs Deputies attempted to stop a vehicle in the Oildale area. The vehicle matched the description of a reported stolen vehicle from the area .The driver attempted to evade the pursuing deputies. The pursuit travelled through the Oildale area and lasted approximately ten minutes. Beardsley School initiated a lock down during the pursuit as a precaution. During the pursuit the suspect vehicle left the roadway and travelled along the railroad tracks in the area of Roberts Drive and Olive Drive. The suspect vehicle crashed into a fence along the canal bank and both occupants ran from the vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as Kevin Black, a 34 year old white male, jumped into the canal in an attempt to get away. Deputies found Black in the canal a short distance away. Black was taken into custody without incident. Black was booked into the Central Receiving Facility for grand theft auto, possession of stolen property, recklessly evading a peace officer, and resisting arrest.
The passenger in the vehicle, identified as Jeremy Johnston, a 38 year old white male, ran from the vehicle and was located hiding in the area. Johnston was taken into custody with out incident and booked into the Central Receiving Facility for possession of stolen property and resisting arrest.
